Shortly thereafter, she called her mother, Kailey Perez, from a blocked number. During the call, Perez reported that her daughter sounded terrified and not in control of the situation.
“She sounded scared, and I don’t think she’s in control,” Perez told KPRC, a local NBC affiliate. “She told me she’d come home, but she hasn’t. I just want her home safely.” Perez suspects that someone may be coercing Ava into saying things against her will.
Police have confirmed that Phillips left the school with a boy who may be her boyfriend. However, it is unclear if this individual is the same person Perez has described as emotionally abusive toward her daughter.
“The situation is concerning,” said a police spokesperson. “We are actively investigating all leads and following up on every possible clue to ensure Ava’s safe return.”
Witnesses reported seeing Phillips enter the white Toyota Corolla and noted that she missed her fourth-period class. Her vehicle was later found in the school parking lot, abandoned with her phone, keys, and backpack still inside.
Phillips is described as 5-foot-2, with long brown hair featuring blonde highlights, and she has dimples. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing black sweatpants, a gray crop top, slippers, and her hair was styled in a loose braid.
