James Ciampi, a Fairfield native, began his service with the Fairfield Police Department as a Class II Special Officer in October 2016 and was promoted to a full-time officer just a year later. His brief but impactful career was marked by numerous commendations and acts of bravery.

In 2022, Ciampi was assigned to the Essex County Auto Theft Task Force, where he played a crucial role in apprehending numerous criminals throughout the county. His commitment to law enforcement and his bravery were recognized with several honors, including four lifesaving citations, three unit citations, and one meritorious service citation.

Ciampi’s exemplary work was also acknowledged by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in 2018. His heroism was further demonstrated in April 2020 when he, along with two other officers, neutralized a suspect who had pointed a loaded handgun at them following a police pursuit. For this brave act, Ciampi received a gallantry star from the Fairfield Police Department, as well as valor awards from the 200 Club of Essex County, the New Jersey State PBA, and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

Beyond his law enforcement duties, Ciampi was also known for his role as a physical fitness instructor and his involvement in the department’s junior police academy. He was a valued member of the Special Olympics Snow Bowl flag football team, embodying the spirit of community engagement and support.

The department and the community rallied around Ciampi in his final months, as Fairfield Police Chief Anthony G. Manna announced his battle with cancer on August 7, 2024. The Chief’s heartfelt message highlighted the department’s dedication to supporting their colleague and encouraged the community to extend their love and prayers.

In the weeks leading up to Ciampi’s death, the department organized several fundraisers to support him, including sales of bracelets, T-shirts, balloons, and bows, as well as lemonade stands and car washes. These efforts were a testament to the community’s deep respect and affection for Ciampi.

Social media has been flooded with condolences and tributes from hundreds of community members who have expressed their sorrow and support for Ciampi’s family and the Fairfield Police Department. Many have shared their personal stories of Ciampi’s kindness, professionalism, and dedication.

As the community grieves, the Fairfield Police Department has indicated that service information will be provided in the coming days. A social media post from the department extended their gratitude to the public for their unwavering support during this challenging time. “We thank the entire community for your support during this difficult time,” the department’s post read.

James Ciampi’s legacy of service, bravery, and community involvement will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
